What is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?

Hardwood floors come in two distinct flooring categories: engineered hardwood and solid hardwood. They look alike but have critical distinctions!

  • Engineered hardwood flooring has a genuine cut of hardwood on top and laminated layers of wood composite below. The grain of each layer runs in different directions, so it’s particularly strong against humidity and wear. Most engineered products can’t be refinished, so they don’t have as long of a lifespan. However, you can install engineered hardwood in places solid hardwood isn’t recommended, like kitchens, mudrooms, basements, and more. Today there are also higher quality engineered hardwood flooring with thicker top layers for added endurance.

  • Solid hardwood flooring has, for centuries, been the choice for those seeking durable flooring. Solid wood planks are made from one continuous piece of genuine hardwood. It can be sanded and refinished throughout its lifespan so that it looks new again. Generally, solid hardwood products can last for the life of your home. However, they may be more susceptible to moisture and foot traffic than their engineered counterparts.

What Type of Wood is Used in my Flooring?

A century ago, hardwood flooring seekers were only given a handful of species choices.

Today, there are tree species from around the globe being used in flooring. Which one you choose depends on your personal taste and budget, as well as functional needs. Different domestic and exotic tree species have more scratch, stain, and moisture-resilience, and many delicately transform shades over time.

Our options include:

  • Pine
  • Mahogany
  • Cherry
  • Maple
  • Oak
  • Exotics

One thing to bear in mind is that each species has its own unique features, hardness levels, and grain patterns. This means that certain species might fare better than others in a high-traffic room.

Hardwood & Humidity

Humidity isn’t your floor’s friend, but with a little effort it’s easy to manage shifting seasons.

Engineered hardwood flooring is less prone to shrinking or expanding when the temperatures fluctuate. Careful climate control is essential: that means air conditioning in the summertime and heat in the winter months. Use a hydrometer to monitor your home’s inner climate.

Where Can I Install a Hardwood Floor?

Before you commit to hardwood flooring, we recommend taking a careful inventory of your space, budget, and needs.

Solid hardwood flooring can be installed anywhere that’s dry and not prone to sudden temperature and humidity changes. It’s not recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, or below grade.

Engineered hardwood flooring can go below grade, as well as moisture-prone spaces like basements, hallways, and mudrooms. Most versatile of all is 100% waterproof hardwood flooring: an engineered hardwood with a vinyl sublayer that can be installed in bathrooms and kitchens without worry.
